The remoteness of the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula is what has preserved
its tranquility. While tourism has developed in many of the other beach areas,
the majority of the Nicoya Peninsula still remains natural and uncrowded.
Although remote, these beaches are easily accessible by daily flights arriving
at Playa Tambor, and rental cars are available in the area. Just a few hours
drive from eith San Jose or Liberia airport, you can take a ferry boat crossing
from Puntarenas to Paquera, then find taxis or rental cars on the Nicoya
Peninsula.
Playa Tambor has a large luxury resort with plenty of water sports to keep
you busy. You can hire a naturalist guide for day-trip tours to go hiking
and birdwatching at the Curu Wildlife Refuge or Cabo Blanco Absolute Natural
Reserve, or go for a sunset dinner and a sailboat cruise around the islands
of the Gulf of Nicoya.
If you prefer Pacific Coast surfing waves, Mal Pais and Santa Teresa are
sure to please you. Get a cabin at the beach or rent a private
house, soak up the sun, a bit of yoga, and surfing lessons.
