The San Jose area covers the breadth of Costa Rica's only metropolitan area. San Jose proper accounts for 80 percent of all officaldom for this city, and the surrounding areas contain the rest of all services for this area (official and unofficial).

The San Jose area is more than a metropolis - it is the central hub of the country. Government offices which service all Costa Ricans are spread across the San Jose metro area. Costa Rica is a tiny country with a population of nearly 4 million people. It's boundaries are literally determined by it's geography. Much of the Central Valley floor is utilized to contain all that is important in Costa Rica in terms of services and commerce.

Political boundaries, such as Provinces and Cantons, do not influence the interaction of the people in this region with their enviroment. The San Jose area, and the remaining valley ringed by mountains, make up the region commonly referred to as the Central Valley.

The downtown area of San Jose Costa Rica has museums and the music hall, shopping malls and nightlife. The surrounding Central Valley region is the gateway to mountains and rainforests.
