The
Mesoamerican Trench extends all along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, and
its fishing is famous as an attraction to anglers from all over the world.
With a maximum depth of about 20,000 feet, the largest regional outcrops of
ocean waters are found in the Pacific Gulf of Papagayo and Panama. These are
caused by the seasonal winds which blow westward from the Caribbean to the
Pacific. The winds push water out to sea, causing outcrops of colder waters
richer in nutrients. This means that the winter months of December, January,
and February have a great diversity of marine life, and are the best months
for fishing in Costa Rica.
